Thursday Beginner Road Ride

posted July 23, 2010

The new WBC Beginner Road Ride that meets in McGregor is having a great time riding and visiting on the rides! They meet every Thursday evening at the McGregor High School parking lot near the football stadium. They begin gathering around 5:45 p.m. and leave the parking lot around 6:00 to 6:15 pm.

Leader Don Ickles has this report from this past Thursday, July 22, 2010:

Thanks to all who came out to participate in the ride this afternoon. If you did not make it out this afternoon, we missed you and hope you will join us next Thursday afternoon. We enjoyed having experienced cyclists Alvis and Warren on the ride today. We all had a great time and wonderful conversations during our 23 mile ride. Thanks to Warren and Jeanne who served as our photographers. Also, a big thank you goes out to Julie and Carlyle for bringing the after ride juice drinks and snacks to help her celebrate her birthday today.

We also want to wish the three J’s…Julie, Julia, and Jeanne best wishes on Sunday morning as they participate in the big Waco Triathlon event. If you have time, come out to support and cheer them on as they compete in this big race event. You go girls! We are proud of you and know you will do great.

This weekly ride is an official ride of the WBC and we must ask everyone who is not a WBC member to sign a waiver form before you can participate. I will have waiver forms at each ride for non WBC members to sign. In addition, all participants must wear a bicycle helmet and cannot use earphones during WBC sponsored rides. If you have not joined the WBC but wish to do so, please go to the WBC website at http://wacobicycleclub.com/home/ and click on “Membership Form” located on the left sidebar of the Home web page. You can print the membership form and mail it along with a check for your annual membership fee. Annual membership dues are only $20. As a member you will get a monthly newsletter as well as other perks such as a discount at Bicycles Outback. Please contact me if you have problems downloading a copy of the WBC Membership Form. I will be happy to e-mail you a copy.

Watch for future e-mails regarding clinics we will be holding. We are planning a basic bicycle maintenance clinic in the very near future. Also, mark your calendar for Thursday, August 5, 2010, for our first monthly cycling fitness test time trial. We will discuss this event and the bike maintenance clinic at the ride next Thursday following our regular ride.

Finally, if you are interested in participating in a fun cycling event, we are planning to take a group of ride participants to the Melon Patch Tour held in De Leon, Texas, on Saturday, August 7, 2010. This annual cycling event has over 700 cyclists riding route distances of 8, 18, 29, 42, and 71 miles. This event is held in conjunction with De Leon’s Peach and Melon Celebration and is listed as one of the best organized small rides in Texas. For those who wish to participate, we will select and plan to ride a route distance together. Most all of the routes are on well maintained rural roads that wind through Texas melon and peanut farm lands. Please e-mail me as soon as possible if you are interested in going to this event. I will contact everyone who wishes to go with further details.
