Impromptu Easy Road Ride

posted July 21, 2010

Seven riders showed up to do the Easy Road Ride on Saturday, July 10th that was announced by email a few days earlier. Most weren’t exactly beginners, but all wanted an easier ride!

Don Ickles, leader of the new Thursday Beginner Road Ride in McGregor (see the ride schedule) was the seasoned rider of the bunch. Others were in various phases of getting in shape, or getting BACK in shape.

The route to Mother Neff State Park is always fun and pretty. The cloud cover was wonderful and there wasn’t much wind, so it made for some very nice riding in July in Texas!

The road past Mother Neff is always a shaded and beautiful place to ride.

They have now fixed the bridge and a thru trip is possible.

The last thing to pass prior to the big hill climb out of the river bottom is a goat farm. Sometimes baby goats can be seen, but this time we just caught a few adults grazing on the side of the road. Check out the riders about to start up the ‘bad hill’ in the distance!

Here’s one of our riders at the top of the hill with a very nice view behind him.

In passing through McGregor, the group decided to stop and get a treat from Dairy Queen… and use their facility! This picture is pretty backlit, but you can see everyone is having fun!

Upon returning to the house we met at for the ride, we were greeted by 2 little lost weiner dogs. It seems that one of the owners of the house (who didn’t make the ride this time) saw these two running down the road and put them in the back yard until their owner could be located. What made this more interesting was that some of the discussion on the ride had been about lost or abandoned animals that people had taken in. The black/brown dog is looking up and barking at one of the cats that lives at the house. He was having a wonderful time! The cat wasn’t.

Since Don works at the kennel of a vet clinic close by, it was thought that he might recognize these dogs. He didn’t, but took up with them right away. The little brown one was shy, but the other one was very friendly.

The owner of the dogs was located and they were returned home safe and sound. The ride was a lot of fun and everyone had a good time.
