Trail Building at Colorado Bend State Park
posted December 15, 2009
Friday was cold and a bit wet, and Saturday morning started out cold and foggy;

however, the fog lifted and the day turned into a perfect day for trail building! The crew immediately set about putting the finishing touches on the trail they spent all of the November trip working on and ALMOST finished! Most of what was left to do was raking, chopping cactus, snipping small branches and roots, and cutting stumps level with the ground, but there was still some chain sawing that had to be done. One of the crew brought a serious weedwhacker that looked more like a push mower. It came in very handy, and he and his 14 year old daughter used it to cut grass from the trail.

The final work was finished when the two ends of said trail and the beginning of the next section of trail were opened up.
Sequence One:

Sequence Two:

After the work was complete, part of the group decided it was time for a ride – time to put the first wheels on the new trail! What an awesome amount of fun was had!

After the ride and lunch, most of the group left. The three coordinators of the project decided to stay and do a recon on a proposed trail that will run near, but not in, Spicewood Springs. Their bushwhack/hike is below in pictures. Can you find the person in the first picture? (hint – near the top)

What a great view this will be if the trail goes here!

The falls along Spicewood Springs were beautiful due to the recent rains.

One thing that was obvious was that the huge stepping stones that were at the entrance to Spicewood Springs trail in October…

Were now GONE!!! Possibly washed away by the heavy rains???

The plan is to have one trail building trip per month out to Colorado Bend State Park in the months of January through April. If you would like to get involved in this project, email TrailBuilding@aol.com and ask to be put on the notice list. When a date is set for each month, you will be notified of when it is and given a chance to sign up to spend the weekend helping to build trail!
