Rails To Trails Project

posted December 10, 2009

Several years ago the City of Waco held a public meeting about a project that is finally under way. The Rails To Trails project going from our Beautiful City Dump to the Sunwest Edition off of Harris Creek Rd is now under way. It is my understanding that when the dump is full the entire area will become a park.

According to the City the holdup has been getting permission to go across the Bosque river. Now that all obstacles have been cleared, the project is underway and the contractors are hard at work.

The trail will be using the old railroad that went between Woodway and Mcgregor. The trail will cross the river and loop back under and around the bridge avoiding the highway.

The project is suppose to end at a new park in the SunWest housing edition. The City has purchased the land, however the park still does not exist.

The project will hopefully be finished by the Spring of this year.

The trail will be about 2 miles long when completed. The park will be the first one built on the Mcgregor side of the river. Access to the trailhead will be located at the City Dump on the Woodway end and Harris Creek Rd. will gain you entrance to the trailhead and park in the Sunwest location.
